Four Essentials For Staying Healthy When Working From Home

Working from home affords us liberties that office workers could only ever dream of. We get to spend more time with our families, dictate our own working hours, and create our ideal working office, down to the finest details. We really are very lucky. But unfortunately, we’re our own worst enemies. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut that we start to neglect our health in favor of our work, which in the long term could even lose us money. If you’re lucky enough to work from home, make sure you’re doing these four things to:

  1. Get some fresh air

Rather than starting work straight after breakfast, go for a walk to work. I know that you’ll end up exactly where you started, but the fresh air and light exercise will wake you up, clear your head, and make it much easier to start work effectively. The same goes for throughout the day. Don’t allow yourself nine hours in your office, staring at a computer. Break it up with a quick walk every couple of hours. You may feel as though you’re wasting your time, but you’ll soon see your efficiency increasing, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start doing it sooner.

  1. Make sure you’re eating well

You dictate your own working hours, so dictate your lunch break too. Eating an unhealthy lunch is not excused by a short lunch break when you work from home. Take some time to throw together a healthy salad or tray bake. It doesn’t have to be haute cuisine, but make sure it’s something healthy and tasty. Your concentration will be improved when you’re not eating too much fatty, salty, or sugary food, and you won’t be taking in more calories than you can burn either. Try to avoid chips for snacks and stick to fruit and vegetable sticks, nuts, and seeds. Your body – and your work – will thank you.

  1. Remember to stretch

Calling anyone who’s stuck in an office chair for hours on end – make sure you stretch regularly! You’ll keep your circulation good; you’ll decrease the likelihood of aches and pains, and it’s a good opportunity to get away from your computer for a few minutes. There are a few stretches you can do from your office, but it’s also a good idea to look into doing yoga too. You don’t need to join a class – have a look at the advice on Chooserly.com when you’re buying the equipment, or have a look at comparoid reviewed spin bikes and follow YouTube videos for a great workout.

  1. Know when to switch off

When your home is your office, you can’t just leave at the end of the day. It’s much more important to know when to turn your computer off, switch off your work telephone, and walk away in the evening. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck in work mode all night where relaxation will be almost impossible. If you can, go out for a walk, to the store or around the block, or visit friends when you finish work, to transition you more successfully into evening mode.

Working from home doesn’t have to be an unhealthy lifestyle, it just takes a little bit of thought and implementation of a healthy routine.
