First-time Mom – How to Take Care of Yourself after Giving Birth

Nothing could ever prepare you from giving birth. If you think you have read all the articles and watched all the shows to equip yourself with the skills needed to take care of your baby, there is still a thing or two that will leave you surprised about just giving birth.

Taking care of your baby after birth could be overwhelming to first-time mom. After all, you have been used to do everything you want before. Some first-time moms tend to take themselves for granted as they put their baby’s needs first. Whilst it is necessary to be the first person to be there for your baby, moms should never forget to take care of themselves as well. Below are the tips on how you can take care of yourself and keep your sanity in place.

  1. Establish a routine

There are a lot of unexpected happenings after your delivery, but try to establish a routine as much as possible to keep things in order.  Having a routine would make you feel organized and help you accomplish more things. Plan one that is convenient for you, your baby and the people around you. It’s okay if you can’t stick to this routine 100% at all times. Dehydration will add more to your stress and exhaustion, so make sure that you keep yourself hydrated. Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day. All of us want to be a supermom, but we can’t do everything at the same time. Being a first time mom would take a lot of adjustments and learning process so it’s okay to make some mistakes from time to time. Don’t feel frustrated if you can’t make your baby fall asleep at bedtime. Just like you, they are adjusting to the real world as well so you would need to be patient and understanding with them.

Though you may not be able to get full 8-hours of sleep every night, get as much quality sleep as you can. Ask your partner or any member of the family to take care of the baby while you are getting your much needed sleep.

  1. Relax & rest

Take a time out amidst nursing, diaper changing, putting the baby to sleep and catching up with the laundry. Always take note that you cannot take care of the baby well if you are exhausted and stressed. From time to time, do something for yourself as a breather. Listen to your favorite song, go out and smell some fresh air, buy a piece of lingerie or simply take a power nap. These little things will surely make you feel rejuvenated.
